Can you use interfacing on felt

Baby booties, coasters, garland, softies — there are lots of different designs to choose from. This free felt coaster pattern is a great way to get started working with felt. These baby bear booties are just too adorable. This is a terrific first not-flat project. It teaches you a different way to applique and join pieces together — the blanket stitch. Play with some felt! Try the Oddballs — a fun pattern for silly monsters.

Is that because I used acrylic felt? But the problem could also be the fabric. Woven fabrics can have VERY different textures and some of them stick to felt better than others. I am so thrilled to have found your site this evening. I have already learned a great deal and I only found you about 20 minutes ago. You must be so proud of your website. I feel blessed to learn from a natural born teacher. We have 3 grandchildren with 2 new ones on the way.

I am gathering information for a monster quilt for the first new baby boy coming. I wont know the sex for the other one in January until later. I made my granddaughter a paper doll quilt several years ago and she still, as a teen, gets it out to put clothes on. I used an iron on adhesive like quilt batting on the backs of the clothes. They do not stay if the quilt is on a wall but she changes outfits on her bed with the quilt.

I am sure there must be a better way but I havent found it yet. What a wonderfully set up introduction to the topics. I will keep referring to it for some time to come as I work my way through these projects. I have a bucket list of crafts to try. Congratulations Wendi.

Thanks for a very helpful site. You have to work quickly or the design does disappear. Will roving wool needle felt onto a wool blend felt? I am thankful to Pinterest from where I always find very informative and interesting sites details. I like to layer the woolen-felt pieces on my Soft Toys generally around the eyes, as can be seen in my Pop the Penguin and Teardrop Soft Toys.

The following mini tutorial will detail step by step how to blanket stitch a smaller woolen-felt shapes on top of a larger woolen-felt shape.

Choose a colour thread to match or contrast the colour of the woolen-felt being sewn. Sewing with 2 strands of DMC Cotton Thread, push the needle up through the back of the shape so that it comes out right along side the outside edge of the shape being sewn. Once your feature shapes have been sewn pin them into position on your Soft Toy.

They are now ready to be sewn onto the toy. There are many beautiful patchwork fabics available to choose from for applique on fabric. I find the amazing range of prints available quite appropriate to use to enhance the features on Soft Toys. Unfortunatly the cotton fabric alone is too fragile and weak to be used on it own. I therefore use fusible webbing to glue the back of the cotton fabric to woolen-felt material to make it stronger and more durable on the Soft Toys.

On the Funny Bunny's tummy and the pupil's of the eyes I have used cotton fabric backed with woolen-felt. The Ladybird detail shows the cotton fabric used on all of the Ladybird'.

Fabric lined woolen-felt shapes have been blanket stitched, arranged and sewn together and to make the Ladybird. This is then sewn onto the Quilt Top for decoration. The following mini tutorial details step by step how to use fusible webbing to back cotton fabric and glue it onto woolen-felt material so that it can be used as a feature on a Soft Toy. Once you have all your woolen-felt shapes blanket stitched and pinned into position onto the Soft Toy, you are ready to sew the features onto the toy.

You will need 2 strands of DMC Embroidery Cotton in the same colour as used on the blanket-stitched shape and an embroidery needle. Take the needle and thread underneath the shape. Go in and out of the outside edge of the fabric on the soft toy to secure the thread. Bring the needle out just to the left side of one of the blanket stitches on the shape. What I would recommend is that you test the spray on some scraps of felt first perhaps also with some threads and stitching on to see what the effect is on the felt and also on any threads and bits of embellishments you intend to use.

Better to test it out on all materials before using on a finished project. Good luck. I wanted to decorate baby bibs with little felt shapes but, am I understanding you correctly? The frequent washing would be a problem? Frequent washing would be a problem with felt added to the bibs. It isn't a good fabric to choose for items that need to be washed and especially not items like baby bibs which need a lot of washing at high temperatures.

Felt is much better used for decorative items. I make felt floral jewelry and wanted to know if there was a way I could seal the felt so it didn't become bobbled or so that it was somewhat waterproof? You could try testing out waterproof fabric sealers on small scraps of felt. You can purchase sealers - most of them need to be sprayed outside because of the chemical fumes. It is likely that any sealer will alter the feel and texture of the felt and perhaps also the look and color.

So this is something you would have to test out. I have read about some artists using hairspray on their work to help stop the bobbles. That may be worth a try on test pieces. Pilling or bobbling though is just a common issue with anything made from wool so that's the nature of the fabric you're working with. Is there a way to shrink felt back when it has been overstretched in just one area. I have a felt Christmas stocking, where there is a small area at the top of the stocking in the cuff, where the felt is very thin and frayed, almost making a hole.

I don't want to replace the whole cuff because of the embroidery on it. Is there any way to place a small piece of the same color felt right behind this thin area. I would not wish to replace the cuff with embroidery either. Where I've had similar issues with some older but treasured felt decorations, I have placed a small patch of felt right behind at the back of the thinning area and stitched it carefully just on the back of the felt only. You can also use a small amount of fabric glue if you are unable to stitch this piece in place.

As long as the color is the same, it will give the appearance of the cuff looking good. And also the patch should help you to enjoy the stocking for longer. I am making a set of "paper" dolls for my granddaughter out of felt and I wanted to double the layers for the bodies with a layer of interfacing sandwiched in between for stiffening but I'm not sure what glue to use to really bond the edges tightly so they don't peel apart.

What would you suggest? Glues and adhesives are always difficult when it comes to felt and I'm never completely satisfied with the end result.

I would advise doing a few test pieces on some scraps of felt with any white craft glues that you already have to see how well they work. Aleene's have a specific felt and foam tacky glue which I've never tried but some people swear by when it comes to felt. I do use the regular Aleene's tacky glue and that works OK but doesn't always stick felt onto felt so well together. Hot glue will stick the felt extremely well together but can easily ruin the look if you're not careful.

If it was me and the dolls are not too tiny, I'd stitch the edges down with a sewing machine because even though more effort that stitching will hold fast and it will last. That may not be an option due to the sizing though. Log in.
